History

Crypto Stamp 1.0 marks a historic turning point in philately: on 11 June 2019, Österreichische Post AG issued the world's first physical postage stamp inseparably paired with a non-fungible token on a public blockchain. The concept was developed by Daniel Döller together with the philately department of Österreichische Post; the design was created by Vienna-based industrial designer Julia Obermüller, whose body of work also includes the sub auspiciis Praesidentis honor ring awarded by the Austrian President.

The print run of 150,000 sold out within days and triggered international press coverage — from Heise Online to BitcoinNews to Linn's Stamp News. Helmut Kogler, president of the Austrian Federation of Philatelic Societies, observed the rapidly inflating secondary-market prices with skepticism and publicly called them unjustified. The Austria Netto Katalog (ANK) and the Michel Catalog nonetheless added Crypto Stamp 1.0 to their listings — ANK 3491, Michel 3470. From Crypto Stamp 2.0 onward, the ANK moved the category into a dedicated chapter.

Symbolically, the stamp draws on two layers of meaning: in the Ethereum community, the unicorn is the unofficial emblem of the blockchain. In business jargon, the term denotes start-up companies valued above one billion US dollars — by convention, creatures as rare as the mythical animal.

Technical Specifications

The stamp block consists of two perforated halves. The left half carries the holographically shimmering unicorn motif and functions as a regular postage stamp at the Letter International EU & Rest of Europe L tariff (max format 353 × 250 × 30 mm, weight up to two kilograms). The right half contains a printed Ethereum paper wallet: the public key visible, the private key and a twelve-word secret word list hidden under three scratch fields.

Each wallet is initialized with a CS1 token (Crypto Stamp Edition 1) and a small amount of Ether. The Ether covers the first transaction fee when sending the token. CS1 tokens are based on the ERC-721 standard on the Ethereum mainchain. The smart contract is implemented as a proxy contract — a detail that later enables the Crypto Stamp Collection feature, which allows the entire collection to be bundled and transferred as a single ERC-721 token.

The block was produced by Variuscard Productions using a combination of screen and offset printing. The substrate is significantly thicker than for classical postage stamps; the format approximates a credit card.

Variant Distribution and Rarity

Although all 150,000 stamps appear nearly identical physically, the digital side hides a five-tier color distribution. The color of an individual token is only revealed when the buyer activates it, and determines the ANK subcategory:

  • Black (ANK 3491a): 78,500 pieces, 52.33% of total
  • Green (ANK 3491b): 40,000 pieces, 26.67%
  • Blue (ANK 3491c): 20,000 pieces, 13.33%
  • Yellow (ANK 3491d): 10,000 pieces, 6.67%
  • Red (ANK 3491e): 1,500 pieces, 1.00%

The red variant is ANK 3491e — the rarest specimen of the first Crypto Stamp generation. This 1-in-100 distribution became, with minor adjustments, the structural template for every subsequent Mainstream edition by Österreichische Post — through to the most recent Crypto Stamp 6 Zeus in 2025.

Value Evolution and Secondary Market

By late June 2019 — just weeks after release — red Crypto Stamps 1.0 were trading among collectors for several hundred to 10,000 EUR. The original face value of 6.90 EUR stood in stark contrast to these secondary-market levels, giving the stamp a speculative character within its first month. One eBay listing in 2019 even asked one million euros for a complete 5-colour set — an extreme speculative ask that never settled, but that captured the hype around the pioneer status. Black stamps — the most common variant at 78,500 pieces — remain most likely to be available near the original issue price.

Established platforms such as Delcampe, eBay, and specialized stamp dealers (Borek, Tyrol-Phila, Nordfrim) regularly carry listings. On the NFT side, transactions occur primarily on OpenSea, provided the original tokens have not been bundled into a Crypto Stamp Collection. Buyers should compare current prices before purchasing — some sellers ask "moon prices" not supported by market averages.

Significance for Philately

With Crypto Stamp 1.0, Österreichische Post set a standard that more than 30 postal services have since followed — from Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal, Japan, Poland, Romania, and the United States. The five-tier color rarity model, the paired ERC-721 token, the paper wallet printed onto the stamp itself — all of these elements have been copied, adapted, and reimagined across the years. Print runs have meanwhile shrunk from 150,000 to 15,000: an indicator that the Post is deliberately steering the program from the early hype phase toward a more focused collector base.

Frequently Asked Questions

When was Crypto Stamp 1.0 issued?

On 11 June 2019 by Österreichische Post AG. It was the first physical postage stamp paired with a non-fungible token on a public blockchain.

Which color variant is the rarest?

The red variant (ANK 3491e) with a mintage of 1,500 pieces, representing 1.00% of the total print run.

Who designed Crypto Stamp 1.0?

The Austrian industrial designer Julia Obermüller, a graduate of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The concept was developed by Daniel Döller together with the philately department of Österreichische Post.

On which blockchain is the NFT?

On the Ethereum mainchain as an ERC-721 token (token name CS1). Each stamp has a printed paper wallet with its private key hidden under scratch fields, containing a pre-loaded CS1 token.

Can the stamp still be used for postage?

Where can I buy a Crypto Stamp 1.0 today?

Long sold out at original release. Secondary markets include Delcampe, eBay, and specialized stamp dealers such as Borek, Tyrol-Phila, or Nordfrim. On the digital side, individual CS1 tokens occasionally appear on OpenSea, but more often as part of bundled Crypto Stamp Collections.

What does the unicorn motif symbolize?

Dual symbolism: in the Ethereum community, the unicorn is the unofficial emblem of the blockchain. In business jargon, 'unicorn' denotes start-ups valued above one billion US dollars — by convention as rare as the mythical creature.
