History
Crypto Stamp 3.0 launched on 21 June 2021 as the third Mainstream edition by Österreichische Post — almost exactly a year after the four-motif CS 2.0 set. With it began the second phase of the Crypto Stamp series: away from pure collector experiment, toward a technologically ambitious product with hardware-based authentication and lower-cost blockchain transactions. Mintage was more than halved versus CS 2.0 — from 240,000 down to 100,000. Face value rose from 7.00 to 9.90 EUR.
Before the official announcement, the Post ran an unusual marketing campaign: in a nod to the whale hunt in Herman Melville's "Moby Dick," daily Easter eggs were hidden in the HTML source of crypto.post.at, gradually revealing motif and release date. Attentive crypto community members could thus uncover all details 24 hours before the official announcement.
About the Motif
The whale picks up a central crypto-culture term. In the community, "whale" refers to people holding particularly large amounts of cryptocurrency — often hundreds or thousands of bitcoin, or millions of dollars in individual tokens. Their trading decisions, in the metaphor of the scene, make high waves on the markets and can significantly influence short-term price movements of individual coins.
The cultural irony is intentional: while real whales are threatened with extinction by hunting and habitat destruction worldwide, the population of crypto whales grows continuously. Crypto Stamp 3.0 depicts a sleeping, gold-toned whale on a blue background — a motif that "comes to life" only after activation by QR code scan.
NFC Chip and Authentication
Crypto Stamp 3.0 is the first Austrian postage stamp with an integrated Near Field Communication chip. Holding an NFC-capable smartphone (Android or iPhone) near the stamp block automatically opens an individual webpage for that specific copy — no dedicated app required. Before activation, this page shows the sleeping whale; only after the QR code scan on the front is the digital twin revealed and the whale "wakes up."
The NFC authentication is cryptographically encrypted and independent of the blockchain. It addresses a practical problem of all earlier Crypto Stamps: distinguishing genuine stamps from forgeries without activating the digital token. Österreichische Post developed the procedure together with the crypto community and integrated security elements for the first time that had previously been used only on identity documents — black security paper and an irreversibly removable security label.
Blockchain Architecture: Ethereum + xDai
The digital side of Crypto Stamp 3.0 is technically complex. Tokens are initially minted on the Ethereum mainchain as the ERC-721 standard. Because Ethereum gas fees in 2021 routinely ran 50 to 100 EUR per transfer — absurd for a 9.90 EUR stamp — the Post integrated the xDai sidechain as a low-cost alternative.
xDai is an EVM-compatible sidechain with its own stablecoin as gas token. Transaction fees typically run under one cent. Via a bridge, Crypto Stamp tokens can move between Ethereum and xDai in either direction, while wallet addresses remain identical. Most active collectors now use the xDai variant. xDai was renamed Gnosis Chain in 2022; technical functionality remained unchanged.
NFT marketplaces supporting Crypto Stamp 3.0 trading include, for example, Unique.one and Unifty (xDai/Gnosis-native), as well as OpenSea (Ethereum-native). Collectors who want to trade actively are better served by the xDai side.
Variant Distribution and Rarity
As with predecessor editions, there are five color variants — Black, Green, Blue, Yellow, Red — with Black as the most common and Red as the rarest. Given a total mintage of 100,000 and the established CS series rarity model (1/6.7/13.3/26.7/52.3%), the resulting distribution is approximately:
- Black: ~52,300 pieces
- Green: ~26,700 pieces
- Blue: ~13,300 pieces
- Yellow: ~6,700 pieces
- Red: ~1,000 pieces
Exact per-color counts have not been published by Österreichische Post for CS 3.0. The estimate is based on the distribution documented for CS 1.0 and 2.0, which, according to the Post's Q&A sessions, was carried over unchanged for CS 3.0.
An additional rarity dimension was developed by the crypto community itself: token-ID digit count (5-digit numbers are considered rarer), and tokens whose IDs contain only uppercase or only lowercase letters. These community conventions are not officially certified but do influence secondary-market prices.
Secondary Market
On the secondary market, Crypto Stamp 3.0 shows clear polarization: Black variants are routinely available between 30 and 90 EUR on Delcampe, eBay, and through specialized dealers (Borek, Tyrol-Phila, Nordfrim). Green and blue variants command premium prices. Red Whales (~1,000 pieces) achieve collector prices in the four- to five-figure EUR range when offered for sale — which is rare.
Significance for the Series
With Crypto Stamp 3.0, the series transformed structurally. The NFC authentication pattern became the template for several follow-on editions worldwide — for example for Liechtensteinische Post (Stamp 4.1 App, September 2021) and Swiss Post (Swiss Crypto Stamp 1.0, November 2021, Polygon-based). The xDai sidechain integration solved the scaling problem on the productive side and effectively shifted the Crypto Stamp economy from Ethereum to lower-cost Layer-2 solutions. With follow-on editions CS 4.0 and CS 5.0, the Post moved consistently to Polygon — Ethereum since then has remained primarily the mint layer for Gold Editions and Art Stamps.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is new with Crypto Stamp 3.0?
Crypto Stamp 3.0 introduces an integrated NFC chip enabling smartphone-based authenticity verification. The token can be moved to the xDai sidechain (today Gnosis Chain) for significantly lower transaction fees than on Ethereum. Additionally, physical security elements such as black security paper and a security label previously used only on identity documents are employed.
How does the NFC chip work?
The NFC chip is integrated into the stamp block. Holding an NFC-capable smartphone (Android or iPhone) near the stamp automatically opens an individual webpage for that specific copy — no dedicated app required. Before activation, this page shows a sleeping whale; after scanning the QR code on the front, the digital twin is revealed and the whale "wakes up".
On which blockchain is the NFT?
Initially minted on Ethereum mainchain as an ERC-721 token. Via a bridge, the token can be moved to the xDai sidechain (today Gnosis Chain), significantly lowering transaction costs. Most active collectors use the xDai variant because Ethereum gas fees, particularly in 2021/22, were very high.
Why a whale?
In the crypto community, holders of very large crypto positions are called "whales" because their trading decisions can make high waves on the markets. While marine whales are threatened with extinction, the number of crypto whales is continuously growing. The whale on Crypto Stamp 3.0 directly references this usage of the term.
How many copies exist?
Total mintage is 100,000 — significantly lower than CS 2.0 (240,000) and below CS 1.0 (150,000). The five color variants follow the established rarity model: roughly 52% Black, 27% Green, 13% Blue, 7% Yellow, 1% Red. Exact per-color distribution has not been published by Österreichische Post.
What was the "whale scavenger hunt"?
Before the official Crypto Stamp 3.0 announcement, Österreichische Post hid daily clues about the release date and motif in the HTML source of crypto.post.at — a nod to the whale hunt in Herman Melville's "Moby Dick." Attentive crypto community members could uncover all information 24 hours before the official announcement.
How can I sell the token?
Crypto Stamp 3.0 can be traded on NFT marketplaces supporting xDai or Ethereum. Examples of xDai-capable marketplaces include Unique.one and Unifty. OpenSea supports Ethereum natively. The physical stamp block is traded separately on Delcampe, eBay, and through specialized stamp dealers such as Borek or Tyrol-Phila.
