About the Belgian Premiere

The bpost Crypto Stamp Dragon is a double milestone: Belgium's very first crypto stamp and at the same time part of the world's first quadrilateral joint edition. With it, bpost became the fourth European postal service to enter the Crypto Stamp world — five years after Österreichische Post (2019), two years after PostNL (2022), and one year after POST Luxembourg (2023).

Belgium's entry strategy followed the pattern established by POST Luxembourg: rather than starting with a national solo edition, bpost chose direct entry into the international joint edition. This strategy reduced its own marketing effort and immediately secured the attention of an international collector base. Belgium is the last Benelux country to be admitted to the Crypto Stamp family — with bpost's participation, the entire Benelux region plus Austria is covered.

Brand Identity Without Heraldic Anchor

Unlike CS 5.1 Lion (Trilateral 2023), where the lion is part of the national coat of arms in two of the three participating countries (NL and LU), the dragon has no direct anchor in Belgian heraldry. This absence of heraldic loading is deliberately chosen: the dragon as a shared motif for AT/NL/LU/BE follows a transnational logic that avoids asymmetries like Lion's.

For Belgium's Crypto Stamp premiere, this means: the bpost Crypto Stamp Dragon reads less as a national statement and more as an entry ticket to the international Crypto Stamp family. The Belgian variant primarily understands itself as Member of the Club, less as a national icon.

Design Language: Gaming-Affine Addressing

Mathieu Goedefroy, PR officer at bpost, framed the design strategy pragmatically: "The dragon is a symbol of prosperity and also a popular symbol in the gaming world." With this dual addressing, bpost wanted to appeal not only to classical stamp collectors but also to a younger audience — a strategy to broaden the collector base beyond the traditional philatelic public.

This gaming affinity is reflected in Lisa Filzi's design language: the "bright, vibrant colors of the four dragons" are, in Filzi's words, a deliberate reference to the "young and playful" Crypto Stamp community. Inspiration came partly from Game of Thrones and modern fantasy iconography.

Design Specifics of the Belgian Variant

Lisa Filzi developed an individual dragon for each of the four participating countries — the Belgian variant shows a BE-specific dragon that is independent in pose, coloring, and layout. As with the other joint partners, the BE variant shares the overarching design language: rainbow-foil effect for the dragon and reflective eye are implemented universally across all four variants.

Pre-Order and Distribution

bpost opened pre-orders for the Crypto Stamp Dragon on 16 October 2024 — five days before the official release date (21 October 2024). Sales took place through two main channels:

  1. bpost eShop (eshop.bpost.be) — primary online channel with worldwide shipping
  2. Filaboetieks — physical philatelic sales locations in several Belgian cities (available one week after the online start)

Additionally, the pre-presentation took place on 19 October 2024 in Arlon (Maison de la Culture) — geographically situated in the Greater Region and thus also easily accessible for Belgian collectors from Wallonia. This cross-border pre-presentation symbolized the geographic proximity and cultural connection of Belgium and Luxembourg.

Variant Distribution

Like all CS 5.2 Dragon variants, the BE dragon exists in five digital color twins:

  • Black (~52.3%) — most common variant
  • Green (~26.7%)
  • Blue (~13.3%)
  • Yellow (~6.7%)
  • Red (~1.0%) — rarest variant

Exact mintage numbers have not been publicly published for the BE variant. As Belgium's crypto stamp premiere, the mintage presumably reflects a cautious market launch estimate — in 2024, bpost could not yet draw on established BE collector metrics for mintage planning.

Significance

The bpost Crypto Stamp Dragon has dual historical significance: it is Belgium's entry into the Crypto Stamp world and at the same time the scaling step from trilateral (CS 5.1 Lion) to quadrilateral (CS 5.2 Dragon) in the joint-edition history. Both premieres occurred in a single act — which immediately positioned bpost in collector circles as a serious contributor.

The subsequent Mythologie edition 2025 with Athena as the Belgian contribution confirms this position: bpost is consistently present as a joint-edition partner and now deliberately brings Belgium's national identity in through Greek mythology symbolism (Athena as goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare — also a nod to Brussels' role as the European center of strategic politics).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the bpost Crypto Stamp Dragon Belgium's first crypto stamp?

Yes. Belgium was the fourth and last country to issue its own crypto stamp in 2024 — after Austria (2019), the Netherlands (2022), and Luxembourg (2023). bpost chose direct entry into the joint edition rather than a solo premiere — a strategy previously also followed by POST Luxembourg.

What strategy did bpost pursue with the dragon?

Mathieu Goedefroy, PR officer at bpost, explained: "The dragon is a symbol of prosperity and also a popular symbol in the gaming world." With this dual addressing, bpost wanted to appeal not only to classical stamp collectors but also to a younger, crypto- and gaming-affine audience — a deliberate strategy to broaden the collector base.

Where can I buy the Belgian Crypto Stamp Dragon?

At the bpost eShop online (pre-orders from 16 October 2024, sales from 21 October 2024) and at Filaboetieks — bpost's philatelic sales outlets in several Belgian cities. Additionally, a pre-presentation took place on 19 October 2024 in Arlon, in which Belgian collectors from Wallonia could also participate. On the secondary market, it circulates on Delcampe, eBay, and Catawiki.

How does the dragon fit Belgium's identity?

Unlike the Lion edition, where the lion has heraldic significance in NL and LU, the dragon has no direct anchor in Belgium's national heraldry. The choice deliberately follows transnational logic: dragons are universal symbols in European mythology as well as in modern fantasy culture. For Belgium's Crypto Stamp premiere, the motif reads less as a national statement and more as an entry ticket to the international Crypto Stamp family.
