Crypto Stamp Safe Dragon
Companion edition to CS 5.2 Dragon with morphing into baby dragons
Austrian Post issued the Crypto Stamp Safe Dragon on 25 February 2025 as a companion edition to the CS 5.2 Dragon series. Mintage 8,000 pieces, retail price EUR 9.90. The edition enables morphing of CS 5.2 Dragons into one of 40 individual baby dragon designs. When purchasing, collectors choose between two trigger symbols: "treasure" or "magic book," which together with the source variant of CS 5.2 Dragon determine which baby dragon emerges.

About the Safe Drache
Crypto Stamp Safe Drache of 25 February 2025 is the fifth Solo AT edition by Österreichische Post after CS 1.0 Unicorn (2019), CS 2.0 Animal Motifs (2020), CS 3.0 Whale (2022), CS 3.1 Africa (2023), and CS 5.0 Bear + Safe (2023) — and the second Safe companion edition ever. It follows the pattern of the first Crypto Stamp Safe (February 2023, companion edition to CS 5.0 Bear) — except that this time the CS 5.2 Dragon serves as the morphing subject.
Function: Morphing into a Unique Baby Dragon
The central innovation of the Safe Drache is the morphing function. Collectors who own both a CS 5.2 Dragon (in one of the four national joint-edition variants — AT, NL, LU, BE) and a CS Safe Drache can combine them in their digital wallet. The result: the Dragon transforms into a unique baby dragon from a library of 40 different designs.
The Two Trigger Symbols
When purchasing the Safe Drache, collectors choose between two transformation symbols:
- Treasure — golden treasure chest as trigger symbol. Mythologically, treasure connects dragons with their iconographically typical hoarding function (dragons as treasure guardians in European and Asian myths).
- Magic book — grimoire/spellbook as trigger symbol. Iconographically, it references magical incantation and arcane arts.
This choice cannot be changed after purchase — it is part of the physical stamp purchase and co-determines which baby dragon ultimately emerges.
The 40 Baby Dragons
Exactly how the 40 baby dragon designs are distributed between treasure and magic-book triggers has not been disclosed by Österreichische Post. Two models are presumed:
Model A — Complete separation. 20 baby dragons for treasure trigger, 20 baby dragons for magic-book trigger. Both triggers produce disjoint sets — collectors who want to see all 40 designs must own both triggers.
Model B — Overlapping sets. Both triggers produce designs from the same 40-pool, but with different probabilities — e.g., treasure frequently produces "warrior dragons" and rarely "scholar dragons," while magic book does the opposite.
Which model applies will only become clear through collector crowdsourcing after the first months.
Influence of Source Dragon Variant
In addition to the trigger symbol, the source variant of the CS 5.2 Dragon also influences which baby dragon emerges. The Dragon exists in 5 color variants (Black, Green, Blue, Yellow, Red) × 4 national variants (AT, NL, LU, BE) = 20 variant combinations. With the 2 trigger symbols, this yields a total of 40 variant combinations — exactly the number of baby dragon designs.
This suggests a deterministic 1:1 mapping: each combination of (Dragon variant, trigger symbol) produces exactly one specific baby dragon. The morphing result is thus not random but programmatically defined — making collecting more strategic.
Physical Highlight: The Hidden Flap
The Safe Drache has a physical component previously unknown in crypto stamps: a hidden flap that can be opened to reveal a concealed magical motif. Until now, all crypto stamps were flat, classical stamp formats. The flap function makes the Safe Drache the first crypto stamp with a movable part.
The flap likely has two functions:
Decorative. The hidden magical motif is a collector highlight — collectors can open the flap and see an additional design element.
Functional. The flap presumably contains hidden authentication codes or NFC activation information. Activation of the digital twin is thus extended: not only QR code scanning, but also flap opening.
This physical innovation is a statement: the crypto stamp brand evolves not only digitally (through morphing functions) but also physically (through interactive designs).
Distribution and Availability
CS Safe Drache was available from 25 February 2025 in the following channels:
- Crypto onchain shop of the Post at
shop.crypto.post.at— primary online channel - Regular post offices in Austria
- Philately sales outlets of the Post
The small mintage of 8,000 pieces is deliberately chosen below the presumed mintage of the mainstream CS 5.2 Dragon. The Safe Drache is thus a structurally scarcer collector edition: even collectors who own all CS editions must actively hunt the Safe Drache — it is not distributed at normal mainstream volume.
Collector Strategies
The Safe Drache rewards four different collector strategies:
Strategy 1 — Complete morphing collection. Collectors acquire a Safe Drache and combine it with their existing Dragon stamps for morphing. This strategy maximizes the digital experience.
Strategy 2 — Both trigger sets. Collectors acquire two Safe Drachen with different trigger symbols (one treasure, one magic book) — to be able to use both morphing triggers. This strategy doubles the accessible baby dragon designs.
Strategy 3 — Full 40er collection. Hardcore collectors acquire 40 Safe Drachen (20 treasure + 20 magic book) and 40 different CS 5.2 Dragons (all 4 national × 5 color variants = 20, doubled for both triggers = 40). They can thereby produce all 40 baby dragons. Very expensive and logistically complex strategy.
Strategy 4 — Investment stock. Collectors acquire several Safe Drachen unused — as investment stock. Due to the small 8,000 mintage and function-induced scarcity, the Safe Drache should appreciate strongly in value over the medium term.
Secondary Market
Due to the small mintage and the morphing function, the Safe Drache moves on the secondary market typically in the range of 30-100 EUR for standard pieces. Premium collector pieces (perfect condition, unopened flap, original packaging) likely achieve higher prices.
A particular collector asymmetry: Treasure vs. Magic Book — if one of the two trigger symbols is more in demand (e.g., if the "magic book" baby dragons are aesthetically more popular), the corresponding trigger symbol will receive a premium on the secondary market. This asymmetry will only show after the first morphing experiences of the community.
Position in Crypto Stamp History
CS Safe Drache marks several strategic points:
- Programmable crypto stamps: The morphing function is the clearest realization of the "programmable stamp" in the CS program — the digital identity can be changed by other stamps
- Physical innovation: The hidden flap is the first physical extension of the classical stamp format
- Safe pattern confirmation: With the second Safe edition (after CS 5.0 Safe 2023), the biennial Safe pattern is confirmed as a regular format
- AT solo tradition: The Safe Drache is another Solo AT edition — confirmation of the Austrian special status as inventor and driving force
- Set mechanics maturity: The reward for complete collectors becomes concrete — Joint + Safe = more digital depth
The Safe Drache is thus not merely another crypto stamp, but proof that the crypto stamp brand can still innovate after 6 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between CS Safe Drache and CS 5.2 Dragon?
CS 5.2 Dragon (October 2024) is the quadrilateral joint edition with AT, NL, LU, and BE. CS Safe Drache (February 2025) is a Solo AT companion edition from the Safe program, whose added value is morphing the Dragon into one of 40 baby dragon designs. It complements CS 5.2, not replaces it. For the full experience, collectors need both editions.
How exactly does morphing work?
Morphing takes place in the digital wallet. When a collector owns both an activated CS 5.2 Dragon (in one of the four national variants) and an activated CS Safe Drache in the same wallet, morphing can be initiated. The Dragon transforms into one of 40 baby dragons. Which design emerges depends on the combination of trigger symbol (treasure or magic book) and Dragon variant.
What is the hidden flap?
CS Safe Drache has a secret flap — a hidden area in the stamp that reveals a magical motif when opened. This is new in crypto stamp history: until now, all crypto stamps were physically flat, classical stamp formats. The flap function adds a tactile component to the format.
Do I need a CS 5.2 Dragon to use the Safe Drache?
For morphing — the main function of the Safe Drache — yes. Without a CS 5.2 Dragon, morphing cannot be triggered. The Safe Drache itself, however, remains a standalone crypto stamp with its own digital twin and physical stamp (including the hidden flap) even without morphing. Collectors who own only the Safe Drache thus still have a complete crypto stamp — but forgo the morphing extension.
Which of the 40 baby dragons are the rarest?
The exact distribution of the 40 baby dragon designs across the 8,000 Safe Drache stamps has not been communicated. Since the morphing result depends on trigger symbol and Dragon variant, some designs likely emerge only through specific combinations and would be correspondingly rare.
