Golden Bull with tulip background

Golden Bull with tulip background

NL Crypto Stamp Gold Edition Bull is the Dutch variant of the first gold joint edition in crypto stamp history — released together with Österreichische Post on 22 November 2022. Mintage 999 pieces (AT: 499 pieces). Retail price 500 EUR with embedded 1g "unicorn" gold bullion from Münze Österreich. Background: tulips (Dutch national flower symbol). PostNL's first gold crypto stamp and first premium joint edition with Österreichische Post.

History

The Gold Edition Bull NL is PostNL's first gold crypto stamp and the Dutch variant of the first gold joint edition in crypto stamp history. Released with Österreichische Post on 22 November 2022, it followed two months after the mainstream CS 4.0 Bull edition (22 September 2022).

PostNL expanded from its first mainstream stamp to its first premium edition within two months. The CS 4.0 Bull edition (September 2022) established sufficient collector demand to support a premium release. The Variuscard platform and joint-edition logistics with Österreichische Post handled both mainstream and premium production from launch.

Technical Specifications

PostNL issued 999 pieces at EUR 500 retail price. The AT variant had 499 pieces at the same price. Each stamp contains 1g Au 999.9 fineness gold bullion from Münze Österreich with unicorn design.

The NL variant has double the mintage of the AT variant, following the CS 4.0 Bull edition pattern where PostNL received larger mintages as market premiere compensation. Higher mintage provides more secondary market liquidity and broader collector access in the Dutch market.

Design

The golden bull with tulip background differentiates the NL variant from the AT variant (edelweiss background). Tulips represent Dutch national identity and agricultural exports. The Bloembollenstreek tulip fields remain a tourist landmark.

The tulip carries historical weight through the Tulip Mania of 1634-1637, one of the first documented speculative bubbles. The golden bull represents rising markets while the tulips reference historical speculation patterns.

Distribution

PostNL distributed through three channels:

  • PostNL webshop at shop.postnl.nl with worldwide shipping
  • Bruna stores for physical premium sales
  • Crypto onchain shop (cryptostamp.com) shared with Österreichische Post

Parallel availability through both postal services allowed direct access to national variants without international ordering.

Secondary Market Performance

Gold Bull NL stamps trade between EUR 600-1,500 on the secondary market (2024 data), below the AT variant range of EUR 700-1,800. The AT variant commands a scarcity premium from its smaller mintage.

From the EUR 500 retail price (2022) to EUR 600-1,500 secondary range (2024), the NL variant shows 20-200% appreciation over two years. Complete AT+NL sets achieve premiums above individual values as collectors seek bilateral joint sets, limiting set availability.

Significance

The Gold Bull NL established several precedents:

  • First Dutch gold crypto stamp
  • First bilateral gold joint edition (with AT variant)
  • Expansion from mainstream to premium within two months
  • Introduction of tulip motif as Dutch visual identity
  • Larger mintage pattern (999 NL vs 499 AT) for market premieres

The release positioned PostNL as the second-largest crypto stamp issuer after Österreichische Post.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the NL Gold Bull PostNL's first gold crypto stamp?

Yes. Gold Edition Bull NL of 22 November 2022 is PostNL's first gold crypto stamp and the first premium joint edition with Österreichische Post. PostNL had previously only issued the CS 4.0 Bull edition (September 2022). Within two months, PostNL expanded from its first mainstream stamp to its first premium edition.

Why does NL get the larger mintage than AT?

The mintage distribution follows the CS 4.0 Bull edition pattern: PostNL received a larger mintage as a market premiere bonus. Österreichische Post deliberately supported PostNL's market entry — larger mintage means more collector attention and better secondary market liquidity. The strategy succeeded: PostNL established itself as the second-largest crypto stamp issuer.

What do the tulips in the background mean?

Tulips are the Netherlands' national flower symbol. The tradition dates to the 17th century (Tulip Mania 1634-1637). While Austria uses edelweiss as an Alpine symbol, tulips represent Dutch identity: maritime trade, flower cultivation, and historical speculation. Tulip Mania was ironically an early speculation bubble — a fitting echo to CS 4.0's bull market motif.
