Cyberstamps (Guernsey Post)
Guernsey Post's reimagining after crypto-stamp cancellation: physical stamp + digital verification code, WITHOUT blockchain/NFT. Launch 16.07.2025. NOT a crypto stamp in the wiki sense.
Cyberstamps — Guernsey Post's Reimagining Concept
"Cyberstamps" is Guernsey Post's reimagining concept for the crypto stamps halted in September 2024. Launched on 16 July 2025 as "world first cyberstamps" — a hybrid model with physical stamp + digital collector element, but WITHOUT blockchain or NFT component.
Important Clarification
Cyberstamps are NOT crypto stamps in the wiki sense. They have:
- ❌ No blockchain
- ❌ No NFT token
- ❌ No smart contract anchor
- ❌ No external verification
- ❌ No self-custody model
They have:
- ✓ Physical stamp with £5 face value
- ✓ Verification code for digital collector album
- ✓ Server-based album on guernseypost.com
- ✓ Common/Rare/Legendary rarity system
- ✓ Trading card format

Bridget Yabsley (Head of Philately): "Although our legal interpretation differed, we were unable to move forward, so we've come up with this alternative approach."
Cyberstamps vs. Crypto Stamps — Detailed Comparison
| Dimension | Crypto Stamp 2024 (halted) | Cyberstamp 2025 (live) |
|---|---|---|
| Price | £10 | £5 (halved) |
| Face value | None ("non-postage") | £5 (postage-functional) |
| Digital component | NFT on blockchain | Verification code + album on server |
| Blockchain | Yes (planned, presumably Polygon) | No |
| Rarity system | Common, Rare, Legendary | Common, Rare, Legendary (same) |
| Theme | Royal Golden Guernsey Goats | Royal Golden Guernsey Goats (same) |
| Format | Classical stamp + QR code | Trading card format + verification code |
| Designer | Chris Griffiths | Chris Griffiths (same) |
| Tech partner | StampFinity | (internal) |
| Regulatory | Virtual Asset (halted) | Regular postage stamp |
Structural Characteristics
Cyberstamps package contains:
- 1 limited cyberstamp (Billy Goat or Nanny Goat)
- 1 exclusive souvenir sheet with both postage stamps
- Activation code for digital collector goat (random traits)
- Album on Guernsey Post website with story and rarity statistics
Self-classification as "world first cyberstamps": Guernsey Post explicitly positions itself against the crypto stamp term. This choice is regulatorily important — the word "Cyberstamp" avoids the virtual asset classification that would be problematic under LCF Law 2022.
Bridget Yabsley Quote
Bridget Yabsley (Head of Philately) on the reasoning for the cyberstamps choice: "A lot more things are going on online, collecting images, collecting images, whether it be stamps, Pokémon cards or NFTs."
Cyberstamps thus position themselves between classical philately and crypto — as a low barrier for collectors who don't want to invest in blockchain wallets but value digital collector experience.
Comparison with Related Concepts
| Concept | Issuer | Blockchain? | NFT? | Face value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crypto stamp (hybrid) | DE/FR/IT/AT/etc. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Crypto stamp (NFT-only) | JP/US | Yes | Yes | No/Yes |
| Cyberstamp | GG (2025) | No | No | Yes |
| 2D Datamatrix stamp | UK Royal Mail | No | No | Yes |
| Classical stamp | All | No | No | Yes |
Cyberstamps are thus structurally closer to 2D Datamatrix stamps than to crypto stamps — both use server-based digital components without blockchain.
"World First" Claim
Guernsey Post calls cyberstamps "world first cyberstamps". This claim is correct in the strict sense:
- Royal Mail's 2D Datamatrix stamps (2022) are similar but not branded as "Cyberstamps"
- POKÉMON trading cards with QR codes have similar mechanics but are not stamps
- Other postal operators have crypto stamps or classical stamps, no cyberstamps
The Cyberstamp branding is Guernsey Post's original concept designation. Whether the term catches on remains open.
Significance in the Wiki
Cyberstamps are documented in the wiki as:
- Reimagining concept after regulatory cancellation — important teaching story
- Counter-example to crypto stamps — what doesn't count as crypto stamp
- Workaround strategy for FATF/VASP-strict jurisdictions
- Unique term in stamp collector vocabulary
Important for wiki users: Anyone who collects crypto stamps does NOT collect cyberstamps. Both are digital-enhanced stamps, but structurally different. Collector categories must be clearly separated.
