Concept: The World of Hlapić

The Novel

Čudnovate zgode šegrta Hlapića (The Brave Adventures of a Little Shoemaker) was published in 1913 by Ivana Brlić Mažuranić. The story follows Hlapić, a shoemaker apprentice who flees from his cruel master and goes on a journey. The author describes him as small as a forearm, as cheerful as a bird, as brave as Prince Marko, as wise as a book and as kind as the sun.

On his journey, Hlapić encounters Gita (a little girl), Bundaš (a loyal dog), and other figures. Through honesty, kindness, nobility, and wisdom, he overcomes evil and returns to his master — who has learned his lesson.

The Message

The novel's themes: kindness finds its way to the heart, good wins over evil, and difficult journeys transform into adventures through which we grow. This message has made the novel a pedagogical work in Croatian literature.

Ivana Brlić Mažuranić — the Croatian Andersen

Brlić Mažuranić (1874-1938) is one of Croatia's most important writers — often called the Croatian Andersen, alluding to the Danish fairy tale author. She was nominated four times for the Nobel Prize in Literature (1931, 1935, 1937, 1938).

She belonged to the Mažuranić family: her grandfather Ivan Mažuranić was Croatian Ban (Viceroy) in the 19th century. Brlić Mažuranić's most important works are Šegrt Hlapić (1913) and Priče iz davnine (1916, Croatian Tales of Long Ago).

The Animated Film Adaptation (1997)

In 1997, the novel was adapted as an animated film — a Croatian-German-Austrian-Korean co-production directed by Milan Blažeković. The film brings the Hlapić world visually to life for new generations.

The animated series expands the novel with characters — Amadeus the parrot is an animation addition — and gives Bundaš and Gita more narrative depth. These characters are the sources for the 5 digital categories of the CS6 edition.

The Five Digital Categories

CS6 comprises 5 digital categories with tiered mintages:

1. Black Rat — 2,000 pieces

The rarest variant shows the black rat — the antagonist of the story. In the narrative, the rat symbolizes the evil that Hlapić overcomes with his kindness and cleverness. It represents the dark element of the story.

2. Amadeus the Parrot — 3,000 pieces

Second rarest variant. Shows Amadeus, the talking parrot from Hlapić's circle of friends. A colorful, humorous motif from the animated series. Amadeus is an animation expansion — not present in the novel.

3. Bundaš the Dog — 4,000 pieces

Medium mintage. Shows Bundaš, the loyal dog who accompanies Hlapić on his adventures. Symbolizes loyalty and friendship. Bundaš is a central figure in both the novel and the animated film.

4. Little Girl Gita — 5,000 pieces

Second most common variant. Shows Gita, Hlapić's companion on his journey. She is the second central human figure of the series and symbolizes courage and compassion. In the novel, Gita is an important character who accompanies Hlapić on part of his journey.

5. Hlapić — the Little Shoemaker — 6,000 pieces

Most common variant. Shows Hlapić himself — the titular hero. Symbol for honesty, kindness, nobility, and wisdom.

Mintage Logic

Total 20,000 pieces. The tiered mintages follow a 1:1.5:2:2.5:3 logic (in thousands) — a tighter tiering than CS5 (1:2:3:4:5). The factor between rarest and most common variant is 3 instead of 5 — distributing CS6 rarity more evenly.

Mintage Reduction

CS6 marks the first mintage reduction in Croatian crypto stamp history:

Distribution Mechanic

CS6 was distributed via three parallel channels:

  1. Post offices throughout Croatia
  2. epostshop.hr — regular online shop
  3. kripto.posta.hr/marka/v6 — specialized crypto platform with crypto payment

The kripto.posta.hr platform enables targeted category selection instead of mystery box — collectors can seek out specific variants like the Black Rat instead of collecting randomly.

Secondary Market

CS6 has been circulating on the secondary market since 2025 with the following ranges:

  • Hlapić (most common, 6,000): EUR 20-40
  • Gita (5,000): EUR 30-60
  • Bundaš (4,000): EUR 40-90
  • Amadeus (3,000): EUR 60-120

Significance in Crypto Stamp History

CS6 marks several points:

  1. First mintage reduction in the Croatian crypto stamp line (30,000 → 20,000)
  2. Tribute to Ivana Brlić Mažuranić — four times Nobel Prize-nominated author
  3. Classic of Croatian children's literature (novel 1913)
  4. Animated film adaptation (1997) as visual source
  5. Polygon blockchain — Postereum brand continuity
  6. New mintage level — confirmed by CS7

CS6 is the sixth crypto stamp of Croatia: it combines literary heritage (Brlić Mažuranić), animation history (1997 film), pedagogical message (Hlapić's values), reduced mintage, and collector mechanic (5 tiered categories). It demonstrates Hrvatska Pošta's cultural documentation through crypto stamps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Šegrt Hlapić?

Šegrt Hlapić (Hlapić the Apprentice) is the hero of the Croatian children's novel Čudnovate zgode šegrta Hlapića (The Brave Adventures of a Little Shoemaker) by Ivana Brlić Mažuranić, published 1913. The author describes Hlapić as small as a forearm, as cheerful as a bird, as brave as Prince Marko, as wise as a book, and as kind as the sun. The story follows Hlapić on his journey — he flees from a cruel master and experiences adventures in which he overcomes evil with honesty, kindness, nobility, and wisdom. The novel is considered a classic of Croatian children's literature and has been translated into many languages.

Who was Ivana Brlić Mažuranić?

Ivana Brlić Mažuranić (1874-1938) is one of the most important Croatian writers — often called the Croatian Andersen. She belonged to the esteemed Mažuranić family: her grandfather Ivan Mažuranić was Croatian Ban (Viceroy) in the 19th century. Brlić Mažuranić was nominated four times for the Nobel Prize in Literature (1931, 1935, 1937, 1938). Her most important works are Šegrt Hlapić (1913) and Priče iz davnine (1916, Croatian Tales of Long Ago).

What is the animated series?

The novel was adapted in 1997 as the animated film "The Brave Adventures of a Little Shoemaker" ("Čudnovate zgode šegrta Hlapića"). The film was a Croatian-German-Austrian-Korean co-production and was directed by Milan Blažeković. The animation combines traditional 2D drawing with contemporary techniques and introduces an entirely new generation to the Hlapić world. The animated series expands the novel with characters like Amadeus the parrot (not central in the novel) and gives Bundaš the dog and Gita more narrative depth. These characters are the sources for the 5 digital categories of the CS6 edition.

Why did Hrvatska Pošta reduce the mintage to 20,000?

The CS6 mintage was reduced from 30,000 (CS4 Tesla, CS5 Balthazar) to 20,000 pieces — a 33% reduction. Hrvatska Pošta has not given an official explanation. The scarcity strategy creates collector value, while market data shows earlier editions were not sold out. Smaller mintages position the editions as more exclusive and drive secondary market prices. CS7 Football Legends (2025) maintained the 20,000 mintage, confirming the strategy. For CS6 collectors, the reduced mintage is a positive factor: Hlapić stamps are structurally scarcer than Tesla or Balthazar stamps.
