Nikola Tesla — Crypto Stamp 4

Nikola Tesla

The fourth crypto stamp from Hrvatska pošta, issued on 20 December 2022 on the Polygon blockchain. The motif features Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) and five of his inventions: the AC motor, Tesla coil, wireless transmission of electromagnetic waves, the AC power system, and high-frequency current experiments. Tesla was born in Smiljan in present-day Croatia. This was the first HR edition on Polygon rather than Ethereum mainnet, developed with technical partners Bitx and Marrow Labs. The tokens are implemented as Postereum 4 on Polygon ERC-721.

History

Hrvatska Pošta issued its fourth crypto stamp on 20 December 2022, featuring Nikola Tesla and his five key inventions. This edition marked HR's migration from Ethereum mainnet to Polygon blockchain, following CS1-CS3 which remained on Ethereum.

Technical Specifications

The edition uses ERC-721 tokens on Polygon Layer-2, with Bitx and Marrow Labs as technical partners (replacing NodeFactory from previous editions). Physical stamps were printed by AKD d.o.o., Zagreb. The platform kripto.posta.hr/marka/v4 handled distribution.

Gas costs dropped from USD 50-200 per transaction on Ethereum to under USD 0.01 on Polygon. CS1-CS3 NFTs remain on Ethereum without migration — collectors hold stamps across two blockchain generations.

Motif and Design

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), born in Smiljan (now Croatia), appears alongside his five inventions:

  • Alternating current (AC) system
  • AC motor
  • Tesla coil
  • Wireless electromagnetic wave transmission
  • High-frequency current experiments

The edition focuses on the historical inventor, not the automotive company. Tesla's AC system connects thematically to CS3's Rimac Nevera electric hypercar — the 1,914 hp vehicle runs on AC motors descended from Tesla's foundational work.

Distribution Timeline

HR departed from its World Stamp Day pattern (9 September) with the 20 December 2022 release. The Polygon migration required additional technical preparation time. December timing placed the edition in the Christmas gift market.

Technical Migration Context

By 2022, most crypto stamp issuers had migrated to Polygon: AT (CS 2.0+), NL, LU, BE, PT, DE, IT, and CH. HR's move aligned with industry standards for lower transaction costs and higher throughput.

Marrow Labs joined as technical co-partner, bringing Polygon smart contract expertise. Bitx continued from previous editions, maintaining technical continuity.

Reception and Significance

CS4 documents HR's transition to Polygon infrastructure after three Ethereum editions. The Tesla theme resonates internationally while claiming the inventor as part of Croatian technical heritage (alongside Serbian claims based on ethnic heritage).

The edition establishes a thematic arc from CS3 Rimac Nevera (electric hypercar) to CS4 Tesla (AC inventor). This connection between contemporary Croatian engineering and historical invention creates continuity across the HR crypto stamp programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why the switch from Ethereum to Polygon?

The switch to Polygon was primarily driven by gas costs. Ethereum mainnet transactions cost 50-200 dollars per NFT mint in 2022, while Polygon Layer-2 costs below 0.01 dollars. For 30,000 NFTs, this means substantial savings. Additionally, practically all leading crypto stamp issuers had already switched to Polygon — AT, NL, LU, BE, PT, DE, IT and CH. Remaining on Ethereum would have meant structural isolation for HR. Polygon wallets are cheaper to use, enabling more collector engagement. The NFTs can interact more easily with other crypto stamp programmes, such as via the OpenSea Polygon marketplace. Finally, Polygon is significantly more energy-efficient than Ethereum's then proof-of-work mechanism. Existing CS1-CS3 NFTs remain on Ethereum and are not migrated — collectors thus have stamps from two tech generations.

Why specifically Tesla as theme?

Tesla was born in Smiljan, today Croatia — Croatia claims him as part of its technical heritage. As an internationally known figure, Tesla gives the edition global collector appeal. The connection between Tesla as inventor and the crypto stamp as technical innovation creates symbolic resonance. The edition deliberately focuses on the historical Nikola Tesla, not on the automotive company of the same name. Tesla's alternating current system forms the foundation of modern electricity and fits thematically with CS3 Rimac, the fully-electric hypercar — a story arc connection between CS3 Rimac Nevera and CS4 Tesla as inventor of AC foundations. The Tesla theme also fits the tech industry identity of partner Marrow Labs.
